Project #2: Matchbox

For this project I chose the word Tagliatelle. I thought it was a long but beautiful word, that would also pose a challenge to work with. Upon discovering it was a type of pasta I could picture the cursive e's and l's resembling ribbon noodles. I learned that tagliatelle is from the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy and was served on silver plates at Lucrezia Borgia's wedding. She was Legend has it that the chef was said to have invented the pasta shape inspired by her golden hair to honor her. Tagliatelle is made of egg and flour and is a flat long noodle. I did some research on Lucrezia and she was depicted wearing dark red gowns in most paintings and sculptures. This may be because she held a position which was usually held by cardinals. I am going to base my matchbox off her aesthetic.

Some of the type treatments I did are very literal, like noodles, some are medical/gothic style, some are curvy script fonts, and some just struck me as very classic, old fashioned Italian style.

Here are some images I found portraying Lucrezia Borgia.

I've decided to make my matchbox a deep red with golden letters, to symbolize her.

Some info I found about Tagliatelle.

I wanted my type to look metallic, so I watched a Spoon Graphics tutorial on how to give text a chrome effect, and tweaked it a bit to make it my own.

Here is my first rough draft of my matchbox design.

In the end I decided a solid gold popped more than the gradient gold.

My REVISED matchbox.
